the hard way

It never fails. It seems that I can manage to make something relatively simple rather complicated. Take the start up of this blog for example.

I had really big plans going into the development of this thing. I wanted to see if I could make a start of a small business online.

I did make a start, but then it got complicated. I started reading everything I could get my hands on in the blogosphere about starting and maintaining a blog. I took the advice of a few veterans to develop a publishing schedule. I learned how to use WordPress like a pro. I learned about social media. I kept on learning.

What was the problem?

Well, I’m sure you can see where this narrative is going. I was learning so much but I wasn’t taking action. I was also letting my old friend fear talk me into being worried about the reception of the blog in the world.

What I needed to do was take action. I became frozen. I wasn’t willing to let the work be good enough. I needed perfection and nothing else would do. I was driving myself crazy to boot.

what did I do?

I decided I needed to stop, take a deep breath and just write. I haven’t looked back and I’m not look at that publishing again schedule either!

The creative task is hard. You need to show up for the work. I have read this advice over and over again. Yet in the moment, it is hard to remember. When I take the pressure off of myself and just work, it’s better.

your turn

  • Have you ever let something get too complicated to the point that you became paralyzed?
  • What was your strategy to get unstuck?

Tell me your ideas in the comments. I could use the help!

Cheers, Catherine
